Children consuming a Mediterranean Diet are 15% less likely to be overweight

A study of 8 European countries presented at this year’s European Congress on Obesity (ECO)in Sofia, Bulgaria, shows that children consuming a diet more in line with the rules of the Mediterranean one are 15% less likely to be overweight or obese than those children who do not.

To keep a healthy weight, we should look to increase our physical output by any means necessary. A pair of recent studies presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 74 Scientific Sessions has revealed that people living in “walkable” neighborhoods, areas conducive to walking, are less likely to suffer from obesity, overweight, and diabetes compared to people living in a neighborhood that requires them to be dependent on automobiles for transportation.

When under stress, many of us reach for sugary foods to make us feel better. Now, researchers from the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, PA, may have discovered why this is. In a new study, the investigators identified receptors for stress-activated hormones located in oral taste buds responsible for detecting sweet, savory and bitter tastes.

Weight loss at any age in adulthood is worthwhile because it could yield long-term heart and vascular benefits, suggests new research. For the first time, the findings indicate that adults who drop a BMI category -- from obese to overweight, or from overweight to normal -- at any time during adult life, even if they regain weight, can reduce these cardiovascular manifestations.
